It’s totally something one can sum up in under 500 words. Here’s my attempt.
Happy weekend! We’re midway to Charlottesville for the 25th (what?!) Anniversary Concert of this a cappella group (and for our home inspection and in-house interview for an au pair agency–whew!). xo
About 6 months ago, when I first started seriously considering going back to school to become a doctor, I googled “mothers in med school” and came across your op-ed in the New York Times. When I clicked through to your blog, I read the whole thing in (I think) 2 sittings. People throw the word “inspiration” around a lot, but I truly was inspired by how you & your husband have managed to have a real life, full of friends and family, in addition to your medical careers. I’m 28 and married. If all goes to plan, it’ll be 10 years until I finish my residency. It’s a long road ahead, but your experience makes me feel like I can do it, too. Thank you so much for blogging. And congratulations on UVA!
Hi Miriam,
I’ve read your comment several times at this point–thank you! Your words are so kind and encouraging (and exactly what I need as I am feeling particularly unmotivated to finish the remaining med school requirements :/). When I talk to people about med school, I’m careful to mention the time commitment. It’s crazy to me that it was almost 9 years ago that I made the decision to go to med school…it feels like such a huge chunk of time, but it truly has gone by in a blink, and every year is better than the last. I wish you the absolute best in your pursuits, and please let me know if there is anything I can do for you!
Thank you again for your kind comment! Means more to me than I can fully express!
