the oldest trick in the book

3 Jan

Baby is crying.  Daddy passes baby off to mommy so he can use the bathroom.

20 minutes pass.  Then 30.  Mommy notices daddy’s cell phone and book are nowhere to be seen.

Baby miraculously falls asleep after lots of bouncing, swaying, and singing.  Daddy emerges from bathroom, at which point he generously offers to give mommy a break.  Meanwhile, he is being praised far and wide as being progressive for knowing how to change a diaper.

I love my husband and I think he is a phenomenal partner and father (even during his half-hour escapes to the bathroom at choice times–let’s be honest, we can all use them).  Folks now need to make current their concept of fatherhood.

I may or may not run and start washing dishes as soon as I put one of the babies down so that nobody asks me to pick the baby up when she starts crying…

I will never understand why people are so amazed at Andrew’s diaper changing & baby calming skills. What the heck do their husbands do? No way would I have 4 kids already if my husband didn’t do everything but nurse the babies himself!

Ha! Awesome! And, if I’m being honest, my showers have been lasting several minutes longer than is necessary these days 🙂

I am with you! Goodness, I still can’t imagine…I am profoundly challenged with just the one kid. You really are super woman! I have to give them credit that at least on their end it’s a non-issue. John is every bit as dumbfounded as I am when people praise him on “being so involved.” I hope you’re able to get some sleep one of these days!

Hey Anna! This totally mad me laugh out loud because I can relate with my husband. He is always with his Ipad reading or watching a movie!! Drives me crazy! I know getting to a movie is hard now that you are a mom, but you need to see “This is 40”. There is a scene where Paul Rudd escapes to the bathroom to play scrabble on his Ipad and his wife totally calls him out! Hope you are doing well…I love your blog, you write so well!

      Hi Elyssa!

Long time! I hope you’re doing well! I’m so glad this post struck a chord 🙂 And I definitely need to see this movie–thanks so much for the recommendation. We’re looking to schedule some retention-of-sanity-time, so I might have to get away and watch it on my own. And I am so flattered that you like my blog; it means a great deal to me. Were you married this summer? You look beautiful, and so happy!

I did get married, the end of May. Hard to believe it was 8 month ago, I’m going to have to stop calling myself a newlywed soon! Aurelia is just a doll, so precious! You look fantastic and your blogging is really going to be useful when we start to think about kids. Let me know if you are ever in VA, I would love to catch up!

Congratulations, belatedly 🙂 I think you have a full year of being a newlywed, right?

You are so kind, thank you! And I would LOVE to catch up when I’m in VA. I’m making a couple running trips in February to celebrate some other ladies getting married, but I’ll be going sans husband, so they’ll be quite quick. I’ll definitely be back again sometime in the spring and would love to see you if the timing works out for you! I hope you’re well!
