Last night, John and I stumbled home exhausted, ate some fudgesicles and eggplant, and made a fire.
About 20 minutes into an old House rerun, “Honey, I think we have a problem.” And a squirrel comes scurrying out of the fireplace!
Being deathly afraid of those needles they use to treat rabies, I, of course, shriek like a little boy as the squirrel beelines for the couch. After I gather my wits, I proceed to defend the stairway as John swats the squirrel out the door with a broom.
We need a dog.

Boston misses you!
i miss boston, but more specifically you! love you!
oh, and thanks so much for the link! i can’t wait 🙂 is your match list all set? exciting times!
No, you need a cap on your chimney. It keeps bats, squirrels and birds out.
Animals in the chimney is almost always an event that ends badly — for the animal.
thanks for the tip! this animal was definitely okay…though i’m surprised how long he tolerated up having a fire in his home
Ha! I think squirrels hibernate, so it must have been a rude awakening…
I know, poor thing! the back story is that this was our second squirrel…the first one got trapped. we think they might be falling in from the roof, eager for a warm place to sleep
Oh man–if Meta would have been there…
my thoughts exactly!
I think if you look up Native American myths you will find that the squirrel in a home is suppose to symbolize something like good health, happiness or something along that line. Rob and I are still laughing!!! Yes he says you need some sort of cover on your chimney. I think your landlord would be happy to take care of it. lol We love you guys!!!
what a nice thought! thanks, christine 🙂 and, yes, turns out we had a chimney cap but it was just not quite placed correctly post chimney inspection earlier this winter. we’re all set now and enjoyed a beautiful, animal-free fire last night!
